Marooned: Being a Narrative of the Sufferings and Adventures of Captain Charles H. Barnard, Embracing an Account of the Seizure of His Vessel at the
Published in Paperback by Syracuse Univ Pr (Trade) (September, 1986)
Average review score:

A historic marooning in 1812 on the Falkland Islands. This is one of the most astounding sea stories I've read. Captain Barnard's narrative is direct, simple and powerful. It really tells the story of a triple marooning--the only one I know. The introduction by Professor Dodge is a "must skip"--it is poorly written and dull. But once you get into Barnard's historic narrative, it is a compelling read. Captain Barnard's narrative begins just prior to the first days of the War of 1812. They set out upon a sealing expedition to the Falkland Islands. The Barnard family (his father is with him--also a sealing captain) is Quaker, and live a ways up the Hudson River. Once upon the Falkland Island, they set up operations (itself a remarkably interesting procedure). In the first few months of the expedition (it is supposed to last about a year or so) they see signal fires from a strange ship. It turns out to be a British ship bound from Australia to England. It has run aground on the Falklands. The Barnard family goes to the British ship's aid, knowing full well the United States is at war with the British. After the rescue (the British shipis ruined) Captain Barnard--in private--informs the British captain (there are British Marines on board) that their two countries are at war. Though they agree to neutrality during their difficulties, the Brits reneg! The British take the Barnard party prisoner--seize their ship and smaller boats, and in turn maroon Captain Barnard with two ordinary seamen on the Falkland Islands. Since few ships went to those islands then, their marooning was essentially a death sentence. The harsh winter was ahead of them. This outstanding narrative is of that marooning--and from this original marooning, things become even more complex. This is a unique read--a little known historic niche. Captain Barnard's narrative is impressive for its detail, composure and--a testimony to masterful seamanship plus mental and spiritual discipline. A must, must read.

Plumber's Standard Handbook
Published in Hardcover by McGraw Hill Text (February, 1999)
Average review score:

Has Value To The Professional & Do-It-Yourselfer AlikeThis Handbook covers everything you could possible want in clearly organized sections & easily understood explanations. It covers & explains every commonly needed aspect of the Plumbing Code & later goes on to explain Installation of everything it talks about in the code section, followed by an explanation of Troubleshooting & Repairs. This book includes a CD-ROM which night be valuable to a plumber as it contains a large variety of trade related business forms. However, this book contains few illustrations/photos & none are color. The book assumes a certain level of knowledge in some areas, i.e., it makes frequent reference to zones 1, 2, & 3 but never explains them, & it includes some diagrams which will be unclear to many outside the trade. Acronyms are defined once & good luck in locating the definition later because you cannot find them in the index. I'm glad I have this book, but for complete coverage, particularly for those of us not in the trade, others books will be needed.

Stagecoach Station 1: Dodge City
Published in Hardcover by Chivers North Amer (October, 1992)
Average review score:

EntertainingMr. Mitchum's book is entertaining, hence the title. It's hard to get into the plot but it is a book yuo read if not just to find out the ending. I would suggest this to older readers. Not because of words or suggestion but because they probably are more able to understand.

Tax Dodge: A Financial Caper That Changes the Lives of All Involved
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (April, 2000)

Tally Ho! Buy It!Greed leads to life and death conflicts in the Irish countryside. There are lots of great characters in this novel - good guys tainted with the gift of blarney, bad guys you love to hate and manipulative women who know how to get what they want. Crissman has a knack for letting us glimpse inside the head of his characters while maintaining a sporting pace. And for equine enthusiasts, there are lots of horses and riding scenes set in a historic hunting lodge. The more I read, the more I liked. Tally Ho! I give it 4 stars.
